Printing Reversible Jerseys

Reversible jerseys can be polyester or nylon—don’t worry about the mesh, which is the holes; we are printing on the material which determines the type of transfer that will work best.

If the jersey is polyester, you will want to use screen printed transfers, names and numbers.  The mesh creates one extra step but is not hard to deal with.   When printing reversible jerseys you are typically printing 4 sides for one jersey –  the front and back for one side, and then the front and back for the other side.  The key to success is to have only the side you are working with on your press.   This means you will want to dress the machine by putting the jersey on the bottom platen like you were dressing a mannequin.  The shirt will be upside down when pressing.   If the shirt has an open bottom, open so only one layer of material is on the platen.  If the bottom is sewn, you will just put the side you are working with on the platen.  Follow the instructions provided with the transfer, however, the holes will poke through, the ink only attaches to the material. I like to use a Teflon Pad. As the holes poke through, the Teflon surface can be wiped down easily before starting the next shirt or back side. You can also use pellon—which helps pull out the holes, but a fresh piece will be needed for each print. Other release papers such as Kraft paper or Transfer Paper can also be used. Or even just regular paper can work.

If your reversible jersey is nylon, the screen printed transfer may work but you will want to test prior to ordering. Our screen printed transfers are guaranteed to work on cotton, polyester and cotton/poly blends but many customers have had success with them on this type of nylon shirt.  If an alternative is needed, our Cad-Printz™ is guaranteed to work on nylon.

Marketing Your T-Shirt Business

I was just reading an article that quoted a 1993 Ted Stahl booklet that still holds true today about marketing your t-shirt business.  None of the items cost anything to do, and can make a huge difference in profits for your business.   Some seem like common sense, but sometimes we all need to be reminded about the obvious.

  1. Tell People What You Do – Have a sign in your window, or a window decal in your car if you are a home business. Let them know what you can do for them.
  2. Have Your Staff Wear Decorated Shirts – This shows what you can do and how it can be used.
  3. Ask for the Sale - You would be surprised how often this is not done – if you sell them a shirt ask if they want matching shorts or a bag. Or add a personalized name.
  4. Add Dates to Custom Shirts – Incorporate the date and a new shirt will be needed the next year.
  5. Add Your Business Logo to Shirts - This lets your customer know who to come back for reorders and future orders. Use your business card as a hang tag.
  6. Sell two color prints - Another version of asking for the sale. Let the customer see two colors (Next week we will be offering multi-color Easy View™ to let you show your customer the improved look of a 2 color. ) If your customer needs numbers, remind them all the pro teams wear 2 color numbers. Make more money from the same customer.
  7. Create a sign up sheet – Make it easy for the customer to take orders. Include the Easy View™ design. Leave a space for personalization with the added price; include a column for size and color.
  8. Be Your Own Walking Billboard - Wear different prints you have done wherever you go! Carry business cards.
  9. Take the Show on the Road - Take your heat press to an event, bring a rack of apparel so they can choose the shirt and apply the print as they wait
  10. Print Your Own Money – Print up coupons for add on items that will cost you nothing. For example, for every team order of 12 or more, free tote bag. These bags cost about $1 and you can use an over run to print it.

Profitable Add-on Sales are Easy with Custom Transfers

With the use of custom transfer gang sheets, add on sales can be very profitable and easy to do.  Gang sheets are custom transfers printed with multiple art images on one sheet and then cut apart for use.  This customer’s team ordered uniforms with an Easy Prints® script tail layout  (QAL-42) on the front, a name and number on the back and the team mascot, a stallion (X2H-1) on the sleeve.  They ordered a color change for printing on both their home and away uniforms.  The customer then showed them a bat bag that could be ordered and offered to print it with the mascot and a number.  They were able to use the same mascot transfer that had been used on the sleeve so this print cost them nothing.  They then ordered 2” numbers using Express Names™ for just $3!  The bag was purchased for $17 and printed with a logo and number for just $3.  They sold the custom printed bags for $35 making an extra $15 on each team member!
