Decorating Sweatshirt Fleece Blankets

The idea of a blanket made out of sweatshirt fabric material is genius. We love sweatshirt blankets, or are they called stadium blankets or fleece blankets? Whatever you’d like to call them, they are a staple for any high school spirit store or college bookstore. They would also make a perfect sale for any type of company, event or group that is outdoor oriented, especially in cold weather! If you haven’t seen them or sold them, it’s time to!

Hoodies are really popular among students, sports fans and players. So why not make a blanket out of the same material. And if we can decorate hooded sweatshirts, then we can decorate these sweatshirt blankets too! This will be one of the easiest items you will decorate. It’s a flat piece of fabric and easy to load on a heat press. But when heat applying these blankets, here are some tips you can take away to make your job of heat printing blankets a lot easier.

Designs can be applied anywhere on a blanket.

Placement:

There are many places on a sweatshirt blanket that you can decorate. You have approximately 50” x 60” of fabric (size varies depending on brand and style). The options include decorating the center, corners, top or bottom, etc. The easiest to decorate with a heat press is the top center or bottom center of the blanket as shown above on the Tigers design. It loads easily on the heat press and when folded and rolled, aligns perfectly for a professional presentation.

Design Sizing:

Designs and sizes on these blankets can vary also. Since we are using our heat press to heat apply the transfers, we want to stick with a size that is manageable on the press. An 11” – 14” design is a perfect size for the heat press and for the size of the blanket. Longer, shorter designs If printing smaller designs on the corner of the blanket, try approximately a 5” design give or take. Again, since it’s a large blanket, there’s no right or wrong way. Application:

Any of our screen printed or digital transfers will apply to these blankets that are traditionally made of a cotton/polyester blend. Goof Proof® screen printed transfers however are a perfect fit for these heavyweight blankets. Always remember to follow the instructions given with your transfer order but here are some application tips:

1)      Find the center for your design. Fold your blanket in half and place the folded area on the heat press. Pre-press the fabric which not only removes moisture for the best adhesion of the ink but it also creates a crease for a perfect center.

2)      Putting a crease on the center edges of the transfer paper will assist with placement. Just align the creases in the paper to the folds on the blanket created in the first tip.
