Increase Your Shirt Value With Rhinestones

Combine a cell phone with an MP3 player… and you get a smart phone!
Mix a DVD player with satellite / cable capabilities… and poof, a DVR!
A dash of laptop with a splash of eReader and you get… a tablet!

It must be something about our nature, but we seem to liking combining two things to make one better thing. But this shouldn’t be news to us garment decorators. Some of us have been doing this for quite some time!

Press a screen printed transfer and some rhinestones… and you get multi-media!

Choosing a rhinestone mascot instead of a screen printed piece of clip art gives this design some flair AND increases its value!

Combining decorating methods gives us either something visually striking, unique in texture, or both! And the best part? Because the garment you made is multimedia you can sell it for a much larger mark up even if all you spent was a piddly $0.66 extra. Yup. You read that right. Let’s break it down, shall we?

Let’s say you’re doing shirts for the local high school’s cheerleader’s moms. We’re going to do screen printed, full front transfer and then some rhinestone cat paws since they’re the “Wildcats”. We’ll say 10 shirts is the order. If we keep it to 1 color, full size (1 per sheet), then each full front transfer will cost you $3.98.

Now we move on to rhinestones. We sell sheets of cat paws in crystal rhinestones. You get 6 paws for $4.00. This makes each paw only $0.66. So first we’ll press our full front transfer.  Then we’ll put 2 paws on either side of the design to spice it up.

Last, let’s talk about the shirt we’re using. This is where we can get creative. If the moms have a tight budget we can always stick with the plain t-shirt for about $1.50. Or… you can offer a fitted ladies shirt with a different look (stripes maybe, or distress texture) for around $6.00 a piece. The ladies fitted shirt is more popular right now. And any garment wholesaler can offer something with a little more flair than a plain white tee. So you’ll have created something truly unique looking.

Let’s do the math now:
Transfer: $3.98
Rhinestones (2 paws): $1.32
Ladies fitted tee: $6.00
Your total cost: $11.30

We suggest you double the cost, which brings your customer’s price to: $22.60. Now take to the internet. Do a Google search and see how much people are paying for a blinged out, ladies fitted, cheer t-shirt. Upwards of $20.00 isn’t uncommon. AND yours will be customized! And even if the moms don’t go for the ladies fitted shirt, we subtract the difference, and your cost is still $6.80. Normally we’d double it to $13.60. But again, a simple internet search indicates that the average price is closer to $18.00 for a shirt like this, even if it’s not a ladies fitted tee. By simply applying those rhinestones we’re in a whole different level of decorating, allowing us to charge an additional $4.60 all because we mixed in some $0.66 rhinestones!

Creative and strategic placement of rhinestones can be either small accents or large designs.
